are negative on the year and have been even before today's report. michael kors is the standout in luxury. remember they went public about a year ago. that's had a great run, up about 60% this year. but that's the standout in retail. can i also point out that some of the big banks are holding up very well today. there's another new high on bank of america. citigroup is at a 52-week high and soj me of the regional bank also on a high as well. >> time for a cough drop. >> sorry. >> bob pisani battling through. we are also on storm watch today. the deadly system that dumped snow and sleet in the country's midsection, releasing tornadoes around the deep south, that's now moving towards the northeast and it is having a major impact on holiday travelers. with hundreds of flights now canceled. weather channel meteorologist david malkoff has the very latest on the storm's path. >> wow, look at that. we are getting 25, 26, 28 mile an hour wind gusts right here on the northern suburbs of indianapolis, indiana, and it is getting worse as the winds start to push and the snow starts to fall down here.

city mayor michael bloomberg called the nra statement a shameful evasion of the crisis. earlier in an interview with abc news "nightline" anchor cynthia mcfadden, bloomberg put some of the blame for gun violence at the feet of the gun lobby. the mayor wants what he calls reasonable restrictions, a ban on assault rifles and high capacity magazines. >> our society finally has woken up and said, we are going to do this whether you like it or not. >> reporter: as for putting armed security guards in schools some authorities support the concept of more police there but say there's no money to do so on such a huge scale. while the nra suggested some of the work could be done by volunteers, "the wall street journal" estimates it would cost $6.7 billion. and will it work? in some cases, perhaps. but at columbine, students were killed despite the fact armed police were there. two of the nation's biggest teachers unions were sharply critical of the nra proposal, one saying the nra is delusional. >> thanks, pierre. >>> on sunday the man who will spearhead the nra's push to put armed guards

schumer and jay rockefeller who owned an ar15 and michael moore and so many of these elites. now we have the demonization of people who suggest that maybe it should be local school districts and communities that take matters into their own hands. i pointed to a great example here in my own home state of colorado. in west cliff colorado where a local city councilman wrote me and told me about a sheriff's jut reach program to citizen volunteers who have been protecting their local school district for ten years now, getting training and working jointly with the sheriff's departments. i think that andrew cuomo maybe ought to talk to his brother, chris cuomo, who himself a member of that liberal democratic family has also endorsed the idea of armed guards in school districts. there are so many other things that do not infringe upon liberty or the second amendment that could go much further along towards preventing the next mass tragedy than what they are proposing now. >> and rob emmanuel's kids are protected by armed guards and the president jokingly said i ran so i can have men with guns ar
